Since beginning practice in 1975, Steve Hayne has served as Chair of the Washington State Bar Association, Criminal Law Section; the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association, Criminal Law Section (twice); and the King County Bar Association, Criminal Law Section. He is a founding member and past president of both the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Washington Foundation for Criminal Justice and is a founder of the Northwest College for DUI Defense. He has been a featured speaker at over 75 continuing legal education seminars in the United States and Canada and has taught trial practice at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, the Trial Masters Program, the Washington State Trial Lawyers Associations “Best of the Best” and at the Northwest College for DUI Defense.

Steve is co-author of the “bible” of DUI defense, Defending DUI’s in Washington State, published by Lexus/Nexus Legal Publishers. He was selected a “Super Lawyer” for 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 by a poll conducted by Washington Law & Politics Magazine. In addition, he has authored articles in numerous local and national periodicals, including the Washington State Bar News, the Trial News and Defense Magazines. In 1992, Steve was rated one of the “top ten” trial lawyers in the state in a poll of 100 judges conducted by the Washington Law Journal. As the periodical noted, “Steve Hayne has clearly impressed a large number of judges. As one judge put it, ‘there’s no question, I’d want Steve Hayne on my side if I were charged with DUI.'”

Among other awards, he has been named one of Seattle’s Best Lawyers by Seattle Magazine, one of Washington’s Top Ten Trial Lawyers by the Washington Law Journal, and has been voted a Super Lawyer every year since inception of the award by Washington Law & Politics magazine.

Steve was born in Renton, Washington where he attended Franklin High School. Following a tour of duty as an infantry rifleman in Vietnam, he attended the University of Washington, graduating with a double major in 1972 in Psychology and Sociology. He went on to graduate from the University of Puget Sound School of Law and became a member of the Washington State Bar in 1975.
His first legal job was an internship with the legendary Alva Long, followed by four years as a public defender where he tried everything from Capital Murder to Reckless Driving. He entered private practice in 1979, emphasizing criminal law and defense of DUI’s in particular. Along with his partners, Steve has dedicated his career to the highest standard of practice and is dedicated to making Hayne, Fox & Bowman the finest DUI defense firm in the country.
